Funding & Grants

This November marks the beginning of the third year of the Huronia Foundation for the Arts. In that short time, we have accomplished a tremendous number of goals - the establishment of our granting programme for artists and arts groups, our incorporation and Trillium grant, our recent ArtWalk in collaboration with the Downtown Midland BIA, our three Dinners for Love of the Arts, as well as our project in collaboration with the Huronia Players and the Quest Art School and Gallery to build an arts centre, to name only a few.

We cannot do all these things alone.  We encourage our members to come out to the Annual General Meeting on November 12. Several of our key Board members have come to the end of their two-year term and must step down from their position, though they may be re-elected.  Your participation and support are essential to our aim to make Huronia one of North America's major arts destinations.

This issue of the Cultural Connection also marks a change in the format of our newsletter.  We have changed to a text-based format, with the events calendar reproduced here in a style that should make it easier for you to find the events and the times you're looking for. Classes and events are broken down by category and all sections are listed by date.

Our Newsflashes have changed as well.  We will require you to fill in an online template or download a printable PDF and your announcements must be in by deadline for them to be published. The Newsflashes will go out once a week on Tuesdays.  Deadline is the previous Friday at 5:00 p.m.

Because of the costs of maintaining the website, newsletter and newsflashes, and because our funding has to go towards our programmes designed to help and support our local artists, we must begin charging for insertions.  At $25.00 per insertion for members and $50.00 for non-members, we are still well under the cost of a newspaper ad, and we publish to a very targeted market.  Our membership comprises artists, collectors, performers and audience members in all disciplines, and in this year alone our numbers have tripled.  Your events and promotions will be received by an audience that truly appreciates what you're doing.

Modern Impressionism in Acrylics
with Tina Poplawski - Adult

Characteristics of Impressionist painting include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities, ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Short, thick strokes of paint are used to quickly capture the essence of the subject, rather than its details. The paint is often applied impasto.

Have you ever wondered how an artist sees the beauty of the world around them and then interpret their experience into an amazing piece of work? Have you ever wanted to ask “How do you do that?” Well now’s your chance. Wye Marsh has asked a number of returning artists to work in the marsh to obtain inspiration from their surroundings for future pieces of work to be viewed and sold during next year's event. Several artists will be working on pieces for next year’s 4th Annual Inspired: Art Show, Wine & Cheese to be held on July 9, 10 and 11, 2010.

Description Contact
HFA Grants and Sponsorship
The HFA receives many requests for assistance from its members and other individuals in the arts community.
We have recently set up a program for local artists and arts groups whose projects provide an improvement to the local arts scene. The program gives these groups and individuals a chance to request funding and volunteer assistance for their events. In return we would like an opportunity to promote the HFA at your event so that we might reach a broader range of prospective members. Working together, we can make the arts a priority.
To find out if you qualify for an HFA grant, go to www.huroniaarts.ca/funding/sponsorship.html
